For
Rachel's official bio, I'll send you over to her
website. I will
tell you that Rachel Caine was the first real life author
that I spoke to. I followed her link in the back of one of
the Weather Warden books to her
Live Journal,
and we've been chatting back and forth ever since.
Thanks to her encouragement I'm still trying
to be a real writer. Her LJ community
NANONov
and the great people I met there got me to finish my first
NANOWRIMO. I owe a lot to Rachel, and I hope she heads back
to San Diego soon.
You’ve
come up with some very original stuff for your characters,
the wardens, the Djinn, even your vampires are different.
Care to share your inspiration for them?
When the
characters have a human basis, I like to think of how their
human life affects their magical one. That's true for all
my characters -- the Wardens, the Djinn, even the vampires.
Everybody, no matter how magical, has to deal with the human
side of their nature and life from time to time.
The
Wardens came about because I've spent more than half my life
living in Tornado Alley, so it's of extra-special meaning
for me. The Djinn were something I came up with that seemed
interesting, but I never quite expected them to take on the
huge mythology they have now. Kind of cool watching it all
grow.
The
vampires came from a conversation I had with a friend (now
sadly gone, named Ter) about how I didn't want to write just
another angsty vampire story with the vampires as the
misunderstood heroes. Ter pushed me to think about that, a
lot, and what I came up with was this idea that the vampires
are a declining species -- like tigers. Deadly and
predatory, but oddly fragile. Added to that, they run their
town pretty much like the Mafia. So there's that, too.
David
and Joanne are one of the greatest Urban Fantasy couples.
Please tell me they get their happily ever after at the end
of the Weather Wardens. They have been through hell and
back.
Yes.
They will. :)
Is Lewis
going to get a HEA of his own? I feel so bad for him.
Um ... I
don't exactly know how to answer that, because I'm just
starting on the last book, and the character arc for Lewis
is still a little bit undecided. I would LIKE to give him a
HEA. But I can't promise that, especially since his real
HEA would be with Jo, and that's not going to happen.
How many
books are in the Morganville Vampire story?
So far,
we have contracts for nine books. Will there be more?
Could be. I truly love writing them.
Is there a
chance of a spin off from Morganville? Any news on the
possible TV series based on the series?
Ha, I
hadn't even THOUGHT of a spinoff from Morganville. No idea
what it would be, really, unless each of the characters
other than Claire got their own book. Will consider,
though.
No news
on possible film/TV, except that it's still simmering on the
stove. The film/TV/multimedia rights are under option by
British producer Charles Armitage. That's all I can tell
you right now.
Undone,
first of the new Outcast Season, books is wonderful. Cassiel
might be my favorite character you’ve brought to life. You
made me cry in Undone, but don’t worry, no spoilers from me.
How many books are planned in the series?
There
are a definitive four books in Cassiel's story. I would
have said, prior to yesterday, that I had the entire thing
totally planned out, but Cassiel surprised me yesterday, so
... maybe I don't. But definitely it will be four books.
Cassiel
in some ways is the toughest to write for me, because she's
so different in tone, style and substance from either
Joanne, in the Weather Warden series, or Claire, in the
Morganville series. She's just ... really different. The
flow of story is totally different.
Which
would you rather have? Joanne’s cars or Cassiel’s
motorcycle?
So tough
to decide -- but generally, the cars. I don't think I'm
Djinn enough for the motorcycle.
Are you
happy your covers have faces on them now? No more headless
heroines…
Delighted, actually! :) I love that the cover designs are
shifting on all the series. To me, it's more personal, more
interesting.
Do you
ever feel guilty about all those cliffhanger endings?
All the
damn time. But it's not like I can stop, at this point.
ALTHOUGH: Fade Out (Book 7, Morganville) DOES NOT have a
cliffhanger ending. Neither will books 8 or 9. And of
course, the last Weather Warden book (book 9, still in
search of a title) will also be cliffhanger-free.
Any other
news you’d like to share with us?
Hmmmmmmmm. I have a new Smart Car with flip paint and
murdered wheels? Also, foreign translation rights recently
sold for Morganville to Spain, France, Poland, Germany, and
Italy. And the UK editions are AWESOME.
And
finally – the Lipton Questions – because I love ‘em…
What
is your favorite word?
Mercy
What
is your least favorite word?
Motherf*cker.
What
turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Really great
storytelling that makes me forget my own pressures,
deadlines, and personal life problems. That is a huge, huge
win for me. Spiritually as well as creatively and
emotionally. Storytelling to me IS spiritual.
What
turns you off creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Having too much to
do, not enough time to do it all. Disappointing myself, and
others.
What
sound or noise do you love?
Really great guitar
playing.
What
sound or noise do you hate?
Wasps buzzing. Which
happens ALL THE TIME in and around my house.
What
is your favorite curse word?
Shit! (boring)
What
profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
What wouldn't?!
Hmmm, I guess probably being a teacher would be amazing.
What
profession would you not like to do?
Morgue attendant.
If
Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you
arrive at the Pearly Gates?
Here's your front row
ticket to tonight's concert, starring Jimi Hendrix and
Stevie Ray Vaughn. :) Oh, and here are the keys to your
Mustang. (Those streets paved in gold MUST be there for a
reason.) |
