I stumbled upon the Remy
Chandler stories by accident while picking up a copy of Mean
Streets. Mean Streets is a collection of four novellas
featuring: Harry Dresden by Jim Butcher, John Taylor by
Simon Green, Harper Blaine by Kat Richardson and Remy
Chandler by Thomas E. Sniegoski. When I read the description
about Remy Chandler I immediately ordered a Kiss Before the
Apocalypse the first Remy novel.
Remy Chandler is an
angel. Thousands of years ago after the war between the
Morning Star and God, the Angel Remiel decided he was done
with violence and destruction. He walked away from Heaven.
Remy isn’t one of the Fallen, instead he spends eons
learning how to be a human being. Remy Chandler doesn’t want
to be seraphim. He just wants to be a man, and he is
constantly fighting the urge to use the incredible power
given to him by God. He is a deep character that I liked
instantly
A
Kiss Before the Apocalypse finds Remy living in present day
Boston with his black Labrador, Marlowe. He works as a
private investigator who does his best to keep out of
Heaven’s way. But he is quickly drawn into a matter of life
and death for the entire world when the Angel of Death
vanishes.
With careful world
building that includes lovely flashbacks, Sniegoski, creates
a fantasy world that works. You won’t be driving any Mac
trucks through plot holes in these books. Each flashback is
well crafted, and explains how Remiel encountered the
immortal beings from his past that are now intruding on his
human life.
The novella Noah’s
Orphans bridges the gap between A Kiss Before the
Apocalypse, and the new novel Dancing on the Head of a Pin
that just came out in April 09. Once again flashbacks and
warring factions set up a really good story. You don’t need
to read Noah’s Orphans to go onto the Dancing, but it’s
worth every penny to pick up Mean Streets – the other
stories in it are terrific too.

With Dancing on the Head
of a Pin, we find Remy adjusting to the events of the last
book. He and Marlowe have a lot to deal with, and the angel
inside of him has almost become a separate voice in his
head. It wants out badly.
Remy’s friends jump into
to help with the new world shattering crisis while he
investigates the theft of some rare artifacts. We find out
how the Fallen earn parole from Hell in this novel, as well
as get to know more about Francis who is a gate keeper.
There is a lot of action
in all three Remy Chandler stories. I think anyone who likes
the Dresden Files, Highlander, and Supernatural will love
these books. I can’t wait for the next one to come out.
