Eric has lost his strip
club, his Mustang, and even Marilyn, the elderly love of his
(mortal) life. Even his body was obliterated. In short, they
almost got him. But when you're a vampire, "almost" is a
very important word. With a little magical help from his
friends, Eric is restored to corporeal form, but his
treasured Mustang gets caught up in the sorcery and winds up
with an unlife of its own. Now, along with "Fang the 'Stang,"
he's out to save Marilyn from one of Void City's most
powerful soul-stealing demons. But salvation comes at a high
price, forcing Eric to venture into his own worst nightmare,
Vampire High Society, to uncover the truth about the origin
of his powers.
When we lost saw Eric,
it looked like he’d lost everything. But the Powers That Be
didn’t know who they were messing with. In the sequel to
Staked (you can read my review over at Three Crow Press),
Eric has to fight just to become solid. His entire world has
gone to shit. He’s caught between his ex-girlfriend,
Tabitha, her current girlfriend, Tabitha’s sister, and a
demon who wants to make a deal with him. Tabitha is trying
to come to terms with being one of the undead, while still
mourning the loss of Eric, and getting caught in the
politics of Void City’s supernatural hierarchy. Neither one
of them is too happy with the way things are going.
Once again you’re shoved
kicking and screaming into Void City. It’s not a nice place.
There are a whole lot of bad things hiding in the shadows
that the humans don’t know about it. I enjoy the setting a
lot. I like the setting a lot. J. F. Lewis doesn’t pull any
punches. Void City is brutal. The characters are still
tight. I can’t say too much without giving out plot details,
but I was happy with the way this part of the story ended.
My only issue was the
power-ups that Eric and Tabitha have. They are special in
book one. They are even more extra special in book two. I’d
have preferred to see the upgrade take longer than it did,
but to be honest I feel that way in almost every Urban
Fantasy book I read. I’m not a big fan of the power-up, but
at least the upgrade in Revamped didn’t destroy the
character or the story. I just wish it had taken longer.
Next month I’ll be
interviewing J.F. Lewis be sure to check it out.
