Dawnii - Featured Artist by Andi Lee

On the 5th December 2008 I had an appointment to get a custom-designed tattoo by Dawnii; a well established UK tattoo artist who opened her own studio, Painted Lady Tattoo Parlour, in April 2008.  When I walked into Painted Lady Tattoo Parlour for the first time what struck me was the  beautiful artwork on the walls. Tattoo inspired, beautiful gypsy girls and religious icons adorned each and every wall; bright colour and crisp lines drawing the eye in. No matter where you stand there is something to see—something to take your mind off the pain!  Painted Lady Tattoo Parlour is definitely more than a tattoo studio; it's an art gallery for tattoo and canvas.  It shows her passion, talent and love for her subject.

While Dawnii prepared me for my first ever coloured tattoo I found out she has been tattooing for five years, and has painted and drawn longer than she can remember (and she's more computer illiterate than I am!). Although she never mentioned it to me, I noticed two convention awards on the wall for best newcomer. Her unique style of traditional tattoos are both refreshing and well executed. Just from looking around her studio you know she will do an outstanding job.  It is obvious she eats, sleeps and breathes tattoos.

Dawnii is inspired by many different artists, from Gustav Klimt to Sabine Gaffron. She loves traditional style tattoo artwork and the use of bold colour juxtaposed against sharp, black lines.

Veering away from tattooing; I found out she has many other interests including her bald kittens, Kevin Bacon and Neil Diamond—which actually took us straight back onto the subject of Dawnii's tattoos (as if we could stay off the subject for long!)  She has recently started a Neil Diamond project where she's going to incorporate as many Diamond lyrics into her tattoos as she can. There are also whispers (and a few tattoos) of an Anchorman project too.

No one can say this girl doesn't have a sense of humour! And if anyone can persuade me to have a snail/gypsy hybrid tattoo with Diamond lyrics it's Dawnii! This is one of the many reasons I knew she'd be perfect to design my traditional-esq style tattoo of a submarine getting opened by a  tin-opener!

When Dawnii finished my tattoo, which turned out so much better than I had pictured, we were already talking about new tattoos and I know it won't be long before I'm at the Painted Lady again to get another piece of art from Dawnii!

If you want to get in touch with Dawnii she can be found at Painted Lady Tattoo Parlour, Studio 1, Number 1, Station Road, Northfield, Birmingham, B31 3TE, UK.

And check out her work at Painted Lady Tattoo or her Myspace Page.
